Improved Dynamic Schedules for Belief Propagation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Belief propagation and its variants are popular methods for approximate inference, but their running time and even their convergence depend greatly on the schedule used to send the messages. Recently, dynamic update schedules have been shown to converge much faster on hard networks than static schedules, namely the residual BP schedule of Elidan et al. [2006]. But that RBP algorithm wastes message updates: many messages are computed solely to determine their priority, and are never actually performed. In this paper, we show that estimating the residual, rather than calculating it directly, leads to significant decreases in the number of messages required for convergence, and in the total running time. The residual is estimated using an upper bound based on recent work on message errors in BP. On both synthetic and real-world networks, this dramatically decreases the running time of BP, in some cases by a factor of five, without affecting the quality of the solution.

Informed Dynamic Scheduling for Belief-Propagation Decoding of LDPC Codes
Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are usually decoded by running an iterative belief-propagation, or message-passing, algorithm over the factor graph of the code. The traditional message-passing schedule consists of updating all the variable nodes in the graph, using the same pre-update information, followed by updating all the check nodes of the graph, again, using the same pre-update info...

decoders are presented. They are applied to codes with parity-check matrices generated either randomly or using geometric properties of elements in Galois fields. Both decoding schedules have low computational requirements. The original concurrent decoding schedule has a large storage requirement that is dependent on the total number of edges in the underlying bipartite graph, while a new, stag...
متن کاملResidual Belief Propagation: Informed Scheduling for Asynchronous Message Passing
Inference for probabilistic graphical models is still very much a practical challenge in large domains. The commonly used and effective belief propagation (BP) algorithm and its generalizations often do not converge when applied to hard, real-life inference tasks. While it is widely recognized that the scheduling of messages in these algorithms may have significant consequences, this issue rema...
متن کاملA belief propagation-based method for task allocation in open and dynamic cloud environments
We propose a decentralized belief propagation-based method, PD-LBP, for multi-agent task allocation in open and dynamic grid and cloud environments where both the sets of agents and tasks constantly change. PD-LBP aims at accelerating the online response to, improving the resilience from the unpredicted changing in the environments, and reducing the message passing for task allocation. To do th...
متن کاملDisparity Map Computation on a Cell Processor
This report describes an efficient implementation of dynamic programming and belief propagation algorithms on a cell processor that may be used to speed up stereo image analysis. Dynamic programming is a method for efficiently solving optimization problems by caching subproblem solutions rather than recomputing them again. It processes image data by scanline optimization; thus it is easily impl...
